A Landscape of Surveillance: code and data

Data and Code to reproduce the analyses of the paper: A Landscape of Surveillance. Investigating Hellenistic Fortifications and Potential Networks of Interaction in the Pergamon Micro-Region by Bernhard Ludwig, Daniel Knitter and Christina G. Williamson

All necessary raw_data are provided in the folder data/raw_data except the DEM. These can be downloaded here: https://land.copernicus.eu/imagery-in-situ/eu-dem/eu-dem-v1.1/ (tiles: eu_dem_v11_E50N10.TIF and eu_dem_v11_E50N20.TIF)

After downloading the DEM (do not forget to put them into the folder data/raw_data) you can follow the analyses scripts in numerical order.

Software used throughout the analyses: - GDAL: to read/write raster files and conduct raster transformations - R: for statistical analyses and general interface between GDAL and GRASS GIS - GRASS GIS: used for geomorphometric and viewshed analyes - Python: only used to extract study area boundaries (could easily be replaced with a simpler approach) - GNU Make (optional): can be used to automate the analyses process via the provided Makefile
